TAIPEI, Taiwan, December 10, 2010 - Synopsys, Inc. (Nasdaq: SNPS), a world leader in software and IP for semiconductor design, verification and manufacturing, today announced that the company has received an R&D Innovation Partner Award from Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA). The award recognizes Synopsys’ outstanding contributions to the Taiwan IT industry through the establishment of an R&D center in Taiwan.
Synopsys accepted the award at a dinner reception hosted by MOEA at the Ambassador Hotel in Taipei. The ceremony acknowledged foreign companies in Taiwan that demonstrate outstanding procurement models, value creation and R&D innovation partnerships. Robbins Yeh, group director of Synopsys Taiwan, received the award from Shih Yen-shiang, minister of economic affairs. In addition to Synopsys, HP, IBM and SONY also received the R&D Innovation Partner Award.
Shih Yen-shiang stressed the government’s strong commitment to the ongoing improvement of Taiwan’s investment environment as a way to help stimulate foreign procurement from Taiwan, increase local employment and encourage foreign companies to set up R&D centers in Taiwan. The goal is to support Taiwan’s emerging industries and enable industry transformation and technology improvements. According to Shih, important policies such as tax incentives are being implemented as an attempt to attract more multinational companies to invest in Taiwan as their regional or global logistics headquarters, or even for their global innovation centers.
According to the Industrial Development Bureau, MOEA, “The semiconductor industry is critical to Taiwan’s economic growth. The government is happy to have a strategic partner like U.S.-based Synopsys who has set up an R&D center in Taiwan because it brings new innovative technology to Taiwan and helps grow our semiconductor industry.”
“We set up our Taiwan R&D center in 2004 to support Taiwan’s industry development policies. Since then we have invested heavily in projects facilitated at the R&D center,” said Robbins Yeh. “Such substantial investment has introduced our advanced 65 and 45 nanometer design flows to the Taiwan semiconductor industry, helping to improve semiconductor business in Taiwan. We have also worked with local academia and business partners to study advanced design solutions and help develop the next generation of software design professionals for the Taiwan semiconductor industry.”
Yeh stressed that ongoing R&D and innovation are necessary to keep pace with the the rapidly changing global economy. According to Yeh, Synopsys intends to stay in close cooperation with local customers by continuing to provide advanced technology solutions and assisting them with the effective integration of resources. The collective goal is to create continued industry growth opportunities for Taiwan.
