Synopsys, Inc. (NASDAQ: SNPS) today confirmed its ownership of inventions in two patents Magma Design Automation, Inc. has asserted against Synopsys. In discovery responses on file with the court, Magma has admitted that:

-- Dr. van Ginneken conceived of 39 inventions in Patent No. 6,453,446
(issued to Magma in 2002) while employed at Synopsys, and
-- Dr. van Ginneken conceived of 17 inventions in Patent No. 6,725,438
(issued to Magma in 2004) while employed at Synopsys.

The relevant discovery responses available on Synopsys' website ( https://www.synopsys.com/company/legal.html  ) are Magma's Supplemental Responses to Synopsys' First Set of Interrogatories (item #1, page 2) and Supplemental Responses to Synopsys' First Set of Requests for Admissions (item #5, page 3 and item #9, page 5).

"The fact that 56 inventions in the van Ginneken patents were conceived before Dr. van Ginneken left Synopsys -- and therefore are not owned by Magma -- is no longer in dispute," said Rex S. Jackson, vice president and general counsel of Synopsys. "These admissions confirm Dr. van Ginneken's sworn statements and make it clear Magma cannot assert these patents against us or any other party."

Synopsys also announced today it is releasing the deposition of Dr. van Ginneken conducted by Magma attorneys on April 26, 2005, and by Synopsys attorneys on April 27, 2005. The transcripts are available on Synopsys' website. Certain portions Magma has designated confidential are not being released.

"After a careful review of the van Ginneken transcripts, Synopsys believes the entire deposition should be released," said Jackson. "Dr. van Ginneken confirmed his sworn declaration was true and voluntarily made and reaffirmed that Magma used the inventions he conceived at Synopsys as a foundation for its products. We look forward to proving our rightful ownership of the remaining claims."
